On Monday, the Odisha government clarified that it has no plans to initiate or support the online sale of Mahaprasad from the Puri Jagannath Temple. Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan emphasized the deep religious significance of Mahaprasad, stating it should be treated with utmost respect. Traditionally, this sacred offering is sold exclusively within the temple premises, and selling it online could compromise its sanctity. His remarks were made in response to social media reactions following an attempt by an online platform to sell Mahaprasad.
Proposal for Online Sale Denied
Minister Harichandan announced that the state government has rejected proposals from certain organizations to sell Mahaprasad and dry offerings through online platforms. He mentioned that while providing Mahaprasad to devotees worldwide is a commendable idea, both the government and the temple administration have decided against it to preserve the purity of the offerings.
No Support for Online Initiatives
The minister expressed concerns about maintaining the sanctity of Mahaprasad if distributed in this manner. He reiterated that the government does not endorse or promote any such initiatives. Harichandan urged devotees to visit the Puri Jagannath Temple to receive Mahaprasad in person. He also noted that revised pricing for Mahaprasad will be implemented soon. This statement followed media reports alleging unauthorized online sales of Mahaprasad.
